I have a penknife in my bag. It’s useful, and has a pleasing physicality. The click of a tool snapping into place; the gentle weight in your palm. I mostly use it to file rough nails or trim horrifying finger skin.
This might be the perfect gift; even if your recipient already owns one, there’s always somewhere else to deploy it. Keep the new penkinfe in your car’s glovebox, or your office drawer, or the bedside cabinet.

I also own this knife, which was a bargain-induced impulse purchase (reduced from $50 to $10). I don’t carry this every day — I think that would be weird — but it’s great when camping. I mostly use it to open burger packages. 1
Somehow, I think this is a weirder gift? It’s more of a tool. You wouldn’t gift someone a hammer.
It’s also an entry-level knife - too boring for both knife enthusiasts and the rest of us. Still, if you’re putting together a set of camping tools… throw a similar entry-level knife in.

Some people use this style of knife handy for opening parcels. Personally, I keep a craft knife in my kitchen drawer for that. ↩︎
